William C. C. Claiborne - Death

Death

Claiborne served in the U.S. Senate until his death died in 1817, and was buried at the St. Louis Cemetery # 1, in New Orleans. This was a controversial honor as this was the most prestigious of the city's cemeteries and is a Roman Catholic cemetery, while Claiborne was Protestant. He was re-interred at the Metairie Cemetery in New Orleans.

Famous quotes containing the word death:

    If it be aught toward the general good,
    Set honor in one eye, and death i’th’ other,
    And I will look on both indifferently;
    For let the gods so speed me as I love
    The name of honor more than I fear death.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)

    During these fits of absolute unconsciousness I drank, God only knows how often or how much. As a matter of course, my enemies referred the insanity to the drink rather than the drink to the insanity. I had indeed, nearly abandoned all hope of a permanent cure when I found one in the death of my wife.
    Edgar Allan Poe (1809–1849)

    Nothing is a matter of life and death except life and death.
    Angela Carter (1940–1992)
