Famous quotes containing the word author:

    My friend devotes himself to his life, whenever he can find the spare time. His motto is: ‘Don’t just sit there: live!’ So he’s too busy to stand, to walk, to do anything, except to live. He even refused to kiss a girl, when invited, on the grounds that it was time again to be living. Schedules are sacred to him.
    Marvin Cohen, U.S. author and humorist. The Self-Devoted Friend, New Directions (1967)

    Th’ increasing prospect tires our wand’ring eyes.
    Hills peep o’er hills, and Alps on Alps arise!
    A perfect Judge will read each work of Wit
    With the same spirit that its author writ:
    Survey the Whole, nor seek slight faults to find
    Where nature moves, and rapture warms the mind;
    Alexander Pope (1688–1744)

    That author who draws a character, even though to common view incongruous in its parts, as the flying-squirrel, and, at different periods, as much at variance with itself as the caterpillar is with the butterfly into which it changes, may yet, in so doing, be not false but faithful to facts.
    Herman Melville (1819–1891)
