Famous quotes containing the words white, house, situation and/or room:

Every time I embrace a black woman I’m embracing slavery, and when I put my arms around a white woman, well, I’m hugging freedom. The white man forbade me to have the white woman on pain of death.... I will not be free until the day I can have a white woman in my bed.
    Eldridge Cleaver (b. 1935)

    They are all gone away,
The house is shut and still,
There is nothing more to say.
    Edwin Arlington Robinson (1869–1935)

... the man in the violent situation reveals those qualities least dispensable in his personality, those qualities which are all he will have to take into eternity with him.
    Flannery O’Connor (1925–1964)

I know you not, this room never,
    the swollen dress I wear,
nor the anonymous spoons that free me,
nor this calendar nor the pulse we pare and cover.
    Anne Sexton (1928–1974)
