Greyhound Racing
White City Stadium was principally used for greyhound racing for the majority of its existence.
The first greyhound meeting took place on 20 June 1927 and was won by a greyhound called Charlie Cranston. The stadium became the Mecca of greyhound racing with tens of thousands of spectators attending meetings on a regular basis, particularly in the 1940s and 1950s. It was the finest track in Britain, with a 500 yards circumference, 120 yards straights and wide sweeping turns.
The track was renowned for holding some of the sports top events in addition to the English Greyhound Derby. They included the Grand National, the Oaks, the Wood Lane Stakes, the Longcross Cup and the Cambridgeshire.

Famous quotes containing the words greyhound and/or racing:
“Why, what a candy deal of courtesy
This fawning greyhound then did proffer me!”
—William Shakespeare (15641616)
“Upscale people are fixated with food simply because they are now able to eat so much of it without getting fat, and the reason they dont get fat is that they maintain a profligate level of calorie expenditure. The very same people whose evenings begin with melted goats cheese ... get up at dawn to run, break for a mid-morning aerobics class, and watch the evening news while racing on a stationary bicycle.”
—Barbara Ehrenreich (b. 1941)
