West Wycombe Today
Although it is on the busy A40, the village centre, retains much of its historical charm. It is mainly owned by the National Trust, and so has resisted modernisation. The High Street has a number of 'old-fashioned' shops (in appearance at least), as well as three pubs, some small offices and a well-used village hall. Just off the High Street are the village Combined School (ages 4–11) and a traditional garden centre. The population is around 1,000.
West Wycombe is also a civil parish in Wycombe district.

Famous quotes containing the words west and/or today:
“These were not men, they were battlefields. And over them, like the sky, arched their sense of harmony, their sense of beauty and rest against which their misery and their struggles were an offence, to which their misery and their struggles were the only approaches they could make, of which their misery and their struggles were an integral part.”
—Rebecca West (18921983)
“To the degree that respect for professors ... has risen in our society, respect for writers has fallen. Today the professorial intellect has achieved its highest public standing since the world began, while writers have come to be called men of letters, by which is meant people who are prevented by some obscure infirmity from becoming competent journalists.”
—Robert Musil (18801942)
