Famous quotes containing the words washington and/or caps:
“... what a strange time it was! Who knew his neighbor? Who was a traitor and who a patriot? The hero of to-day was the suspected of to-morrow.... There were traitors in the most secret council-chambers. Generals, senators, and secretaries looked at each other with suspicious eyes.... —M. E. W. Sherwood (18261903)
“... people were so ridiculous with their illusions, carrying their fools caps unawares, thinking their own lies opaque while everybody elses were transparent, making themselves exceptions to everything, as if when all the world looked yellow under a lamp they alone were rosy.”
—George Eliot [Mary Ann (or Marian)
