Voluntary student unionism (VSU) is a policy, notable in Australia, under which membership of – and payment of membership fees to – university student organisations is voluntary.
Voluntary student unionism has been implemented in Australia and at the University of Auckland in New Zealand, where it is known as voluntary student membership (VSM).
Forms of VSU have been law in the state of Western Australia from 1994 until 2002, in Victoria from 1994 to 2000, in New Zealand since 1999 and across Australia from 1 July 2006.
