Virginia Military Institute

The Virginia Military Institute (VMI), located in Lexington, Virginia, is the oldest state-supported military college and one of six senior military colleges in the United States. Unlike any of the other senior military colleges in the United States, all students at VMI are military cadets pursuing bachelor degrees. VMI offers cadets a spartan, physically and academically demanding environment combined with strict military discipline. VMI offers degrees in fourteen different disciplines in engineering, the sciences and the liberal arts. Although VMI has been called the "West Point of the South," it differs from the federal service academies in several respects. For example, while all VMI cadets must participate in the Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC), they are not required to serve in the military upon graduation. Instead, VMI graduates are afforded the flexibility of accepting a commission in any of the US military branches or pursuing civilian endeavors upon graduation.

Famous quotes containing the words military and/or institute:

[I]t is a civil Cowardice to be backward in asserting what you ought to expect, as it is a military Fear to be slow in attacking when it is your Duty.
    Richard Steele (1672–1729)

Whenever any form of government shall become destructive of these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it, & to institute new government, laying it’s foundation on such principles & organising it’s powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their safety & happiness.
    Thomas Jefferson (1743–1826)
