Virgin Gorda Airport (IATA: VIJ, ICAO: TUPW) is an airport on Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands, an overseas territory of the United Kingdom. The airport is owned and operated by the Government of the VI (UK). The government purchased the airport from Little Dix Bay Resort for $2.9 million in 2005. In January, 2010 the airport was closed for major construction work. It reopened in December, 2010 as an Uncertificated Airport with Limitations and Restrictions put in place by the ASSI regulatory agency. It is currently restricted to a small handful of airlines that must be fully approved by both ASSI and the FAA to operate at the field. Two of the more long time and prominent VIJ carriers are Air Sunshine that offers scheduled service and Island Birds which offers on demand air charters.

Famous quotes containing the words virgin and/or airport:
“Lets have some good, old-fashioned literature, with a virgin and a moral.”
—Mason Cooley (b. 1927)
“Airplanes are invariably scheduled to depart at such times as 7:54, 9:21 or 11:37. This extreme specificity has the effect on the novice of instilling in him the twin beliefs that he will be arriving at 10:08, 1:43 or 4:22, and that he should get to the airport on time. These beliefs are not only erroneous but actually unhealthy.”
—Fran Lebowitz (b. 1950)
