Formal Usage
States that formally recognize villages vary widely in the definition of the term. Most commonly, a village is either a special district or a municipality. As municipalities, a village may
- differ from a city or town in terms of population;
- differ from a city in terms of dependence on a township; or
- be virtually equivalent to a city or town.

Famous quotes containing the words formal and/or usage:
“Then the justice,
In fair round belly with good capon lined,
With eyes severe and beard of formal cut,
Full of wise saws and modern instances;
And so he plays his part.”
—William Shakespeare (15641616)
“Girls who put out are tramps. Girls who dont are ladies. This is, however, a rather archaic usage of the word. Should one of you boys happen upon a girl who doesnt put out, do not jump to the conclusion that you have found a lady. What you have probably found is a lesbian.”
—Fran Lebowitz (b. 1951)
