Contest

In October 1980, the VVMF announced a contest for the design of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial would be open to anyone over 18 years of age. The contest was the largest of its kind ever held in the United States, with over 2,573 contestants, and was judged by eight professional artists and architects. Famous quotes containing the word contest:

Weapons are an important factor in war, but not the decisive factor; it is people, not things, that are decisive. The contest of strength is not only a contest of military and economic power, but also a contest of human power and morale. Military and economic power is necessarily wielded by people.
    Mao Zedong (1893–1976)

It is odd but agitation or contest of any kind gives a rebound to my spirits and sets me up for a time.
    George Gordon Noel Byron (1788–1824)

You may be always victorious if you will never enter into any contest where the issue does not wholly depend upon yourself.
    Epictetus (c. 55–135)
