Early Life and Career
Salva was born into a conservative Catholic family in Martinez, California. His biological father abandoned the family and Salva reports that the stepfather was often drunk and physically abusive.
One of his favorite pastimes as a kid was watching Creature Features on television and is a self-confessed "Jaws baby".
In 1986, he made the low budget horror film Something in the Basement which attracted the attention of filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola, who in turn helped Salva finance his first feature-length film, Clownhouse (1989), and many subsequent films.

Famous quotes containing the words early, life and/or career:
“It is so very late that we
May call it early by and by. Good night.”
—William Shakespeare (15641616)
“Films and gramophone records, music, books and buildings show clearly how vigorously a mans life and work go on after his death, whether we feel it or not, whether we are aware of the individual names or not.... There is no such thing as death according to our view!”
—Martin Bormann (19001945)
“It is a great many years since at the outset of my career I had to think seriously what life had to offer that was worth having. I came to the conclusion that the chief good for me was freedom to learn, think, and say what I pleased, when I pleased. I have acted on that conviction... and though strongly, and perhaps wisely, warned that I should probably come to grief, I am entirely satisfied with the results of the line of action I have adopted.”
—Thomas Henry Huxley (182595)
