The Vice-Chamberlain of the Household is usually a senior government whip in the British House of Commons ranking third or fourth after the Chief Whip and the Deputy Chief Whip and is an officer of the Royal Household of the Sovereign of the United Kingdom. He or she is the Deputy to the Lord Chamberlain of the Household. The Vice-Chamberlain's main role is to compile a daily private report to the Queen on proceedings in the House of Commons. As a member of the Royal Household his or her duties are largely nominal, though ceremonial duties include accompanying the Queen and Royal Household at events such as the annual garden party at Buckingham Palace. The role also requires the holder to be held "captive" at Buckingham Palace when the Queen drives in procession to Westminster for the State opening of Parliament.
Notable holders of the office include Sir George Carteret, Lord Hervey, the Earl of Harrington, the Earl Spencer, Michael Stewart and Bernard Weatherill.

Famous quotes containing the word household:
“Compared to other parents, remarried parents seem more desirous of their childs approval, more alert to the childs emotional state, and more sensitive in their parent-child relations. Perhaps this is the result of heightened empathy for the childs suffering, perhaps it is a guilt reaction; in either case, it gives the child a potent weaponthe power to disrupt the new household and come between parent and the new spouse.”
—Letty Cottin Pogrebin (20th century)
