Vermont Avenue is one of the longest running north/south streets in Los Angeles, California with a length of about 23.3 miles (37.5 km). Located just west of the Harbor Freeway (I-110) for the major portion south of Downtown Los Angeles, it starts in Griffith Park at the Greek Theatre in the Los Feliz neighborhood as a one-lane divided road (it is known as Vermont Canyon Road north of this point) and at the intersection with Los Feliz Boulevard, it widens to a two-lane road. Vermont Avenue passes to the east of the Barnsdall Art Park at the intersection with Hollywood Boulevard and the Children's Hospital of Los Angeles at Sunset Boulevard, and it effectively marks the eastern end of Hollywood. South of the Hollywood Freeway (US 101), it passes through Koreatown and to the north it passes next to Little Armenia.
South of Gage Avenue, Vermont widens into a three-lane road with a wide median and adjacent frontage roads. At 88th Street, the road widens again with a tree-lined median and just north of Redondo Beach Boulevard, an abandoned railway runs through the middle. At this point, Vermont Ave. marks the eastern boundary of the city of Gardena. At 164th Street in Gardena, Vermont narrows to a two-lane thoroughfare, and it also marks the western end of the Gardena Freeway (SR 91). South of the San Diego Freeway (I-405), Vermont enters the unincorporated area of West Carson. Finally, at the intersection with Pacific Coast Highway, Vermont curves to the southwest after traveling in a straight line for 22 miles (35 km). It ends just north of San Pedro after it merges with Normandie Avenue (turning into Gaffey St.) at Anaheim Street at a five-point intersection. Vermont Avenue is the third longest of the north/south thoroughfares.
Vermont Avenue passes at the western end of the University of Southern California and Exposition Park.
Vermont has the most rail stations in the Metro system; These include stations on Sunset Boulevard, Santa Monica Boulevard, Beverly Boulevard, and Wilshire Boulevard (also served by the Purple Line), on the Red Line, Exposition Boulevard on the Expo Line; and Interstate 105 on the Green Line.
Metro Local lines 204 and 205, Gardena Transit line 2, run along Vermont Avenue, as well as Metro Rapid line 754 and Metro Express line 550; Metro lines 204 and 754 run between Sunset Boulevard and Vermont Green Line Station, Gardena line 2 between Interstate 105 and the Artesia Transit Center, and Metro lines 205 and 550 to PCH. Metro lines 204 and 754 use 60-foot (18 m) NABI buses (9230-9599)
Famous quotes containing the words vermont and/or avenue:
“In order to get to East Russet you take the Vermont Central as far as Twitchells Falls and change there for Torpid River Junction, where a spur line takes you right into Gormley. At Gormley you are met by a buckboard which takes you back to Torpid River Junction again.”
—Robert Benchley (18891945)
“Play is a major avenue for learning to manage anxiety. It gives the child a safe space where she can experiment at will, suspending the rules and constraints of physical and social reality. In play, the child becomes master rather than subject.... Play allows the child to transcend passivity and to become the active doer of what happens around her.”
—Alicia F. Lieberman (20th century)
