Venerable Order of Saint John - Precedence in Each Realm

Precedence in Each Realm

As the Order of St. John is open to the citizens of sixteen different countries, each with their own system of orders, decorations, and medals, the order's place of precedence varies from country to country. Unlike those of other hierarchical orders, all grades of the Order of St. John rank between the order's predecessor and successor. Some examples follow:

Country Preceding Following
Australia
Medal of the Order of Australia Distinguished Conduct Medal (if awarded prior to 5 October 1992)
Conspicuous Service Medal
Canada
Member of the Royal Victorian Order Grand Officer of the National Order of Quebec
New Zealand
Royal Red Cross (Class II) Distinguished Conduct Medal
United Kingdom Royal Red Cross (Class II) Distinguished Conduct Medal

Famous quotes containing the words precedence and/or realm:

What is line? It is life. A line must live at each point along its course in such a way that the artist’s presence makes itself felt above that of the model.... With the writer, line takes precedence over form and content. It runs through the words he assembles. It strikes a continuous note unperceived by ear or eye. It is, in a way, the soul’s style, and if the line ceases to have a life of its own, if it only describes an arabesque, the soul is missing and the writing dies.
    Jean Cocteau (1889–1963)

The fate of our times is characterized by rationalization and intellectualization and, above all, by the “disenchantment of the world.” Precisely the ultimate and most sublime values have retreated from public life either into the transcendental realm of mystic life or into the brotherliness of direct and personal human relations. It is not accidental that our greatest art is intimate and not monumental.
    Max Weber (1864–1920)
