Veale Gardens - Meeting Place

Meeting Place

Veale Gardens has been historically known as a homosexual meeting place for a number of years. There has been much debate over the years to either better police Veale Gardens or to close it during the evenings completely. Consequently, in late 2006 the public toilets were bulldozed and new toilets built on the South Terrace frontage. In 2007 the park entrance off Sir Lewis Cohen Avenue was closed and the street returned to park land to reduce late night parking.

Famous quotes containing the words meeting and/or place:

Again, the great number of cultivated men keep each other up to a high standard. The habit of meeting well-read and knowing men teaches the art of omission and selection.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

[T]here is no Part of the World where Servants have those Privileges and Advantages as in England: They have no where else such plentiful Diet, large Wages, or indulgent Liberty: There is no place wherein they labour less, and yet where they are so little respectful, more wasteful, more negligent, or where they so frequently change their Masters.
    Richard Steele (1672–1729)
