Taxonomy
There are two species and several subspecies:
Coracopsis,
- Coracopsis vasa, - (Greater Vasa Parrot)
- Coracopsis vasa comorensis,
- Coracopsis vasa drouhardi,
- Coracopsis vasa vasa,
- Coracopsis nigra, - (Lesser Vasa Parrot also known as Black Parrot)
- Coracopsis nigra libs,
- Coracopsis nigra nigra,
- Coracopsis nigra sibilans,
- Coracopsis nigra barklyi, - (Seychelles Black Parrot)
Additionally, a recent study using ancient DNA shows that the Mascarene Parrot is positioned in between the various subspecies of the Lesser Vasa Parrot. Based on the principle of priority, the genus Coracopsis will be renamed to Mascarinus if the original finding is confirmed.
