On 1 April 2011, Mar Varkey Vithayathil died suddenly from a massive heart attack. He had suffered from prolonged heart problems for some time and died about 2:00 PM of sudden and irreversible cardiac arrest from the heart attack at Lisie Hospital in Ernakulam, where he had been hurriedly taken after fainting while celebrating Mass at noon at his chapel in the Major Archbishop's house, in Ernakulam. On learning of the cardinal's death, Pope Benedict XVI sent to Bishop Puthur a telegram of condolence, bestowing the Apostolic Blessing upon the faithful in mourning. He praised Cardinal Vithayathil for his work in support of the Syro-Malabar Church as well as the universal Church and in support of evangelization and ecumenism. The Mumbai Cardinal Archbishop Oswald Gracias, who was President of the CBCI, made similar comments.

Famous quotes containing the word death:
“Life springs from death and from the graves of patriot men and women spring living nations.... They think that they have pacified Ireland. They think that they have purchased half of us and intimidated the other half. They think that they have foreseen everything, think they have provided against everything; but the fools, the fools, the fools, they have left us our Fenian dead, and while Ireland holds these graves Ireland unfree shall never be at peace.”
—Patrick Henry Pearse (18791916)
“Tis no great valor to perish sword in hand, and bravado on lip; cased all in panoply complete. For even the alligator dies in his mail, and the swordfish never surrenders. To expire, mild-eyed, in ones bed, transcends the death of Epaminondas.”
—Herman Melville (18191891)
“Sinks to the deep abyss where Satan crawls
Where horrid Death and Despair lies.”
—Thomas Traherne (16361674)
