USS Belleau Wood (CVL-24) - Significance of The Name

Significance of The Name

The ship was named in memory of the World War I Battle of Belleau Wood, in which United States soldiers and Marines of the American Expeditionary Forces, defeated the German troops after nearly four weeks of intense fighting. It is said that the Germans referred to them as Teufelshunde — Devil Dogs – and it was this moniker that became the ship's mascot, and one of the nicknames for US Marines (Devil Dog).

Famous quotes containing the words significance of the, significance of and/or significance:

It is necessary not to be Christian to appreciate the beauty and significance of the life of Christ.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

I am not afraid that I shall exaggerate the value and significance of life, but that I shall not be up to the occasion which it is.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

The hypothesis I wish to advance is that ... the language of morality is in ... grave disorder.... What we possess, if this is true, are the fragments of a conceptual scheme, parts of which now lack those contexts from which their significance derived. We possess indeed simulacra of morality, we continue to use many of the key expressions. But we have—very largely if not entirely—lost our comprehension, both theoretical and practical, of morality.
    Alasdair Chalmers MacIntyre (b. 1929)
