USS Akron (ZRS-4) - Maiden Voyage

Maiden Voyage

On 2 November 1931, Akron cast off for a maiden voyage as a commissioned "ship" of the U.S. Navy and cruised down the eastern seaboard to Washington D.C. Over the weeks that followed, some 300 hours aloft were logged in a series of flights, including a 46-hour endurance run to Mobile, Alabama and back. The return leg of the trip was made via the valleys of the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers.

Famous quotes containing the words maiden and/or voyage:

    Here’s to the maiden of bashful fifteen;
    Here’s to the widow of fifty;
    Here’s to the flaunting extravagant queen;
    And here’s to the housewife that’s thrifty.
    Let the toast pass,—
    Drink to the lass,
    I’ll warrant she’ll prove an excuse for the glass.
    Richard Brinsley Sheridan (1751–1816)

    I dare say I am compelled, unconsciously compelled, now to write volume after volume, as in past years I was compelled to go to sea, voyage after voyage. Leaves must follow upon each other as leagues used to follow in the days gone by, on and on to the appointed end, which, being Truth itself, is One—one for all men and for all occupations.
    Joseph Conrad (1857–1924)
