United States Coast Guard Service

Loaned to the United States Coast Guard on 5 January 1949, Absecon became the Coast Guard cutter USCGC Absecon (WAVP-374) and operated as such until 1972. Operating primarily in the Atlantic out of Norfolk, Virginia, she served as a weather ship on ocean stations, and also conducted search and rescue and law enforcement operations in addition to United States Coast Guard Academy cadet training cruises. In 1966 she was reclassified as a high endurance cutter and redesignated WHEC-374, and was transferred permanently to the Coast Guard.

What do we want with this vast and worthless area, of this region of savages and wild beasts, of deserts, of shifting sands and whirlwinds, of dust, of cactus and prairie dogs; to what use could we ever hope to put these great deserts, or those endless mountain ranges, impenetrable and covered to their very base with eternal snow? What can we ever hope to do with the western coast, a coast of 3,000 miles, rockbound, cheerless, uninviting and not a harbor in it?
—For the State of Kansas, U.S. public relief program (1935-1943)

    —P.W. (Pieter Willem)

Let not the tie be mercenary, though the service is measured in money. Make yourself necessary to somebody. Do not make life hard to any.
