She was laid down on 11 February 1941 at Kearny, New Jersey by the Federal Shipbuilding and Drydock Company, launched on 22 November 1941, sponsored by Miss Hilda Ward, the daughter of the late Admiral Ward, and commissioned on 4 March 1942 with Commander Orville F. Gregor in command.
