U.S. Route 171 - History

History

U.S. 171 began as a major two lane highway. In 1962, I-210 (Louisiana) was completed, and funds were appropriated for the highway to become four-laned. In the mid-1960s, the old iron bridge over the Calcasieu River, north of Lake Charles, was replaced and the highway was altered for the new bridge and portion of highway going into Moss Bluff, Louisiana. U.S highway 171 was designated a Blue Star Memorial Highway on Nov.11, 1964, and a Highway marker was placed in the historic district at the junction of US 171 and Washington street. The TIMED Program widening of U.S. 171 completed in July 2010 and it is now a four lane divided highway for its entire rural existence.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

The history of American politics is littered with bodies of people who took so pure a position that they had no clout at all.
    Ben C. Bradlee (b. 1921)

In all history no class has been enfranchised without some selfish motive underlying. If to-day we could prove to Republicans or Democrats that every woman would vote for their party, we should be enfranchised.
    Carrie Chapman Catt (1859–1947)

Racism is an ism to which everyone in the world today is exposed; for or against, we must take sides. And the history of the future will differ according to the decision which we make.
    Ruth Benedict (1887–1948)
