Urban Effects On The Environment
Humans are the driving force behind urban ecology and influence the environment in a variety of ways, such as modifying land surfaces and waterways, introducing foreign species, and altering biogeochemical cycles. Some of these effects are more apparent, such as the reversal of the Chicago River to accommodate the growing pollution levels and trade on the river. Other effects can be more gradual such as the change in global climate due to urbanization.

Famous quotes containing the words urban, effects and/or environment:
“The city is a fact in nature, like a cave, a run of mackerel or an ant-heap. But it is also a conscious work of art, and it holds within its communal framework many simpler and more personal forms of art. Mind takes form in the city; and in turn, urban forms condition mind.”
—Lewis Mumford (18951990)
“The ultimate result of shielding men from the effects of folly, is to fill the world with fools.”
—Herbert Spencer (18201903)
“People between twenty and forty are not sympathetic. The child has the capacity to do but it cant know. It only knows when it is no longer able to doafter forty. Between twenty and forty the will of the child to do gets stronger, more dangerous, but it has not begun to learn to know yet. Since his capacity to do is forced into channels of evil through environment and pressures, man is strong before he is moral. The worlds anguish is caused by people between twenty and forty.”
—William Faulkner (18971962)
