Uppsala Student Union (Uppsala studentkår) is one of two students' unions at Uppsala University in Uppsala, Sweden.
According to Swedish law, university students are no longer required to be members of a students' union since 2010. Uppsala Student Union covers, in theory, all faculties at Uppsala University except for the Faculty of Pharmacy, which has its own students' union.
Uppsala Student Union was founded in March 1849 by the student nations at the university and was the first Swedish students' union. With more than 33,000 members, it is also the largest students' union in Sweden.
The students' union appoints student representatives to various boards and committees of the university.
Uppsala Student Union is a member of the Swedish National Union of Students.
Famous quotes containing the words student and/or union:
“When I tried to talk to my father about the kind of work I might do after college, he said, You know, Charlotte, Ive been giving a lot of thought to that, and it seems to me that the world really needs good, competent secretaries. Your English degree will help you. He said this with perfect seriousness. I was an A student at Bryn Mawr ...”
—Charlotte Palmer (b. c. 1925)
“My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or to destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave, I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves, I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone, I would also do that.”
—Abraham Lincoln (18091865)
