Upper Styria

In the Austrian usage of the term, Upper Styria (Obersteiermark) refers exclusively to the northwestern, generally mountainous and well wooded half of the federal state of Styria, the southwestern half of the state around the capital of Graz being known as Mittelsteiermark (Central Styria), which is further divided into Eastern and Western Styria (east and west of Graz).

The Obersteiermark consists of the districts of Murau, Liezen, Judenburg, Knittelfeld, Leoben, Bruck an der Mur and Mürzzuschlag. It is a generally rural region characterized by agriculture and tourism, except for the area between the towns of Judenburg and Mürzzuschlag, in the valley formed by the rivers Mur and Mürz, with extensive industrial sites.

Famous quotes containing the word upper:

When my old wife lived, upon
This day she was both pantler, butler, cook,
Both dame and servant, welcomed all, served all,
Would sing her song and dance her turn, now here
At upper end o’the table, now i’the middle,
On his shoulder, and his, her face afire
With labor, and the thing she took to quench it
She would to each one sip.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)
