Maths Department Restructure Furore

On 17 March 2008, the University of Southern Queensland announced proposals to cut staff within the Department of Mathematics and Computing by more than 50%, planning to cut the existing faculty from 14 to 6. This proposal was despite the federal government allocating additional funding specifically for mathematics and statistics which was approved in 2007 and flowing into USQ in 2008. Instead, the university administration retained the increased funding for their own administrative expenses.

The prominent expatriate Australian mathematician Terence Tao launched a publicity initiative to bring this to the attention of a broader audience. Additional media coverage of this can be found at.

Famous quotes containing the word department:

While the focus in the landscape of Old World cities was commonly government structures, churches, or the residences of rulers, the landscape and the skyline of American cities have boasted their hotels, department stores, office buildings, apartments, and skyscrapers. In this grandeur, Americans have expressed their Booster Pride, their hopes for visitors and new settlers, and customers, for thriving commerce and industry.
    Daniel J. Boorstin (b. 1914)
