Events
The traditional Majáles spring festival is organised by the Student Union. At the Faculty of Arts, there is a cycle of lectures featuring interesting personalities from all walks of life, and exhibitions of art and photography are put on in the Top Floor gallery. The Faculty of Science is closely involved in a range of events bringing science to a wide general public, including the regular Chemistry at the Castle festival. The Faculty of Fine Arts holds regular exhibitions in its own Student gallery.
In addition, a range of competitions takes place at the individual faculties. Every year, talented young mathematicians compete at the Vojtěch Jarník International Mathematical Competition, run by the Faculty of Science. The same faculty also hosts a Chess Competition. The annual Translation Competition organized by the Faculty of Arts is a holder of the Label 2009 award.

Famous quotes containing the word events:
“By the power elite, we refer to those political, economic, and military circles which as an intricate set of overlapping cliques share decisions having at least national consequences. In so far as national events are decided, the power elite are those who decide them.”
—C. Wright Mills (19161962)
“Turn where we may, within, around, the voice of great events is proclaiming to us, Reform, that you may preserve!”
—Thomas Babington Macaulay (18001859)
“This is certainly not the place for a discourse about what festivals are for. Discussions on this theme were plentiful during that phase of preparation and on the whole were fruitless. My experience is that discussion is fruitless. What sets forth and demonstrates is the sight of events in action, is living through these events and understanding them.”
—Doris Lessing (b. 1919)
