The University of Mumbai (informally known as Mumbai University or MU) is a public state university located in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. It was known as the University of Bombay until 1996 when the city of Bombay was renamed as Mumbai. University of Mumbai was established in 1857 consequent upon "Wood's Education Dispatch", and is one amongst the first three Universities in India.
The university was founded by Dr. John Wilson (Founder: John Wilson Education Society, Wilson College, Mumbai (1832)) in 1857 and is modelled on the universities of Britain. Bombay university primarily imparts education through its affiliated colleges. The affiliated colleges of the university are spread throughout the city of Mumbai and four coastal districts in Maharashtra: Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg. The university offers Bachelors', Masters' and Doctoral degrees apart from Diplomas and Certificates in many disciplines. St. Xavier's College was affiliated to the university in 1868, with Dr John Wilson as its first vice-chancellor. Initially, the Elphinstone College building was used for Mumbai University.
Today, the university campuses serve as centres of administration and centres for higher education whose medium of instruction is in English. In 1996, the name of the university was changed from University of Bombay to University of Mumbai, according to a Government Gazette. It is abbreviated as either UoM, standing for University of Mumbai or MU for Mumbai University. Most of the colleges in the city of Mumbai and the districts of Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg are affiliated to the University of Mumbai. In suburban Mumbai, the university campus is located at Kalina, Santacruz. The campus houses both academic and administrative departments of the university. Another campus located in Fort carries out administrative work only.

Famous quotes containing the words university of and/or university:
“Television ... helps blur the distinction between framed and unframed reality. Whereas going to the movies necessarily entails leaving ones ordinary surroundings, soap operas are in fact spatially inseparable from the rest of ones life. In homes where television is on most of the time, they are also temporally integrated into ones real life and, unlike the experience of going out in the evening to see a show, may not even interrupt its regular flow.”
—Eviatar Zerubavel, U.S. sociologist, educator. The Fine Line: Making Distinctions in Everyday Life, ch. 5, University of Chicago Press (1991)
“Fowls in the frith,
Fishes in the flood,
And I must wax wod:
Much sorrow I walk with
For best of bone and blood.”
—Unknown. Fowls in the Frith. . .
