Student Organizations
There are student branches of various professional organizations such as IEEE and ASME, minority groups such as SWE, NSBE and SAGE as well as honor societies such as Tau Beta Pi. Most are housed in Pierpont Commons (the student union on North Campus) or in "The Bullpen" in the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) building. The University of Michigan Engineering Council (UMEC), represents the student body of the College of Engineering, also has an office in the EECS building. It meets on a bi-weekly basis and its newsletter, The All-Nighter, is published on the dates of the general body meetings.
Civil and mechanical engineering project teams are primarily housed in the Wilson Student Project Center. Several major project teams include Concrete Canoe, Formula SAE M Racing Team, Baja SAE Team, Michigan Mars Rover Team, Steel Bridge, and the University of Michigan Solar Car Team. In 2006, the UM Human Powered Submarine Team won the International Submarine Races. Radio Aurora Explorer (RAX), a University of Michigan designed and fabricated Cubesat, is the first National Science Foundation sponsored CubeSat mission.
Additionally, over 1/3 of the Michigan Marching Band consists of Michigan Engineers.

Famous quotes containing the word student:
“When our kids are young, many of us rush out to buy a cute little baby book to record the meaningful events of our young childs life...But Ive often thought there should be a second book, one with room to record the moral milestones of our childs lives. There might be space to record dates she first shared or showed compassion or befriended a new student or thought of sending Grandma a get-well card or told the truth despite its cost.”
—Fred G. Gosman (20th century)
