Famous quotes containing the words university of, university, applied, arts and/or vienna:
“Television ... helps blur the distinction between framed and unframed reality. Whereas going to the movies necessarily entails leaving ones ordinary surroundings, soap operas are in fact spatially inseparable from the rest of ones life. In homes where television is on most of the time, they are also temporally integrated into ones real life and, unlike the experience of going out in the evening to see a show, may not even interrupt its regular flow.”
—Eviatar Zerubavel, U.S. sociologist, educator. The Fine Line: Making Distinctions in Everyday Life, ch. 5, University of Chicago Press (1991)
“The exquisite art of idleness, one of the most important things that any University can teach.”
—Oscar Wilde (18541900)
“A propositional sign, applied and thought out, is a thought. A thought is a proposition with a sense.”
—Ludwig Wittgenstein (18891951)
“As the unity of the modern world becomes increasingly a technological rather than a social affair, the techniques of the arts provide the most valuable means of insight into the real direction of our own collective purposes.”
—Marshall McLuhan (19111980)
“Grusinskaya: I want to be alone.
Meierheim: Where have you been? I suppose I can cancel the Vienna contract.
Grusinskaya: I just want to be alone.
Meierheim: Youre going to be very much alone, my dear madam. This is the end.”
—William A. Drake (19001965)
