University Museum

A university museum is a museum or collection run by a university, typically founded to aid teaching and research within the university. The Ashmolean Museum at the University of Oxford in England is an early example, originally housed in the building that is now the Museum of the History of Science. A more recent example is the Holburne Museum of Art in Bath, originally constructed as a hotel in 1796 it is now the official museum of the University of Bath. The focus of university museums includes research into, as well as the display of, collections.

Famous quotes containing the words university and/or museum:

A University should be a place of light, of liberty, and of learning.
    Benjamin Disraeli (1804–1881)

The Museum is not meant either for the wanderer to see by accident or for the pilgrim to see with awe. It is meant for the mere slave of a routine of self-education to stuff himself with every sort of incongruous intellectual food in one indigestible meal.
    Gilbert Keith Chesterton (1874–1936)
