Current Role

United States Special Operations Command played a pivotal role in fighting the former Taliban government in Afghanistan in 2001 and toppling it thereafter, as well as combating the insurgency and capturing Saddam Hussein in Iraq. In 2010, "of about 13,000 Special Operations forces deployed overseas, about 9,000 evenly divided between Iraq and Afghanistan."
