Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia - Cathedral

Cathedral

The seat of the Archeparchy is the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, built in the style of the Hagia Sophia, and located across the street from the Archeparchy's offices. It hosted a papal visit by Pope John Paul II in 1979, the first time a Roman Pontiff had visited an Eastern Catholic church in the United States. In addition, Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko and his wife paid a state visit to the Archeparchy and the Cathedral in 2005.

Famous quotes containing the word cathedral:

There’s a certain Slant of light,
    Winter Afternoons—
    That oppresses, like the Heft
    Of Cathedral Tunes—
    Emily Dickinson (1830–1886)

    ... and met
    At numerous cathedral cities
    Unknown to the clergy.
    Philip Larkin (1922–1986)

The charm, one might say the genius of memory, is that it is choosy, chancy, and temperamental: it rejects the edifying cathedral and indelibly photographs the small boy outside, chewing a hunk of melon in the dust.
    Elizabeth Bowen (1899–1973)
