Tynemouth (UK Parliament Constituency) - History

History

An interesting Tyneside seat due mostly to its historical marginality, the constituency covers Tynemouth, North Shields, Whitley Bay, Cullercoats, Monkseaton, and since 2010 Shiremoor and Backworth. The seat has historically shown the highest level of support for the Conservative Party in the Tyne and Wear area, with the Conservatives holding the seat from 1950 until 1997 (though almost never with large majorities). However, since the 1997 general election, it has been represented by a Labour MP, Alan Campbell.
