Tui Viti - Possible Restoration

Possible Restoration

In the last two decades since Fiji became a republic, the question on restoring the monarchy has not abated. The current interim Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama displays portraits of the Queen and her consort, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, above his office desk. He has also described himself as a monarchist: "I'm still loyal to the Queen. Many people are in Fiji. One of the things I'd like to do is see her restored as our monarch, to be Queen of Fiji again." However, Bainimarama's government lacks recognition from Commonwealth realms such as Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

To date, no referendum has ever been called to decide on the question of restoration. If at any time Fiji does restore its monarchy, it may become the first nation to do so in the 21st century.

Famous quotes containing the word restoration:

Men who are occupied in the restoration of health to other men, by the joint exertion of skill and humanity, are above all the great of the earth. They even partake of divinity, since to preserve and renew is almost as noble as to create.
    Voltaire [François Marie Arouet] (1694–1778)

The King [Charles II] after the Restoration accused the poet, Edmund Waller, of having made finer verses in praise of Oliver Cromwell than of himself; to which he agreed, saying, that Fiction was the soul of Poetry.
Philip Dormer Stanhope, 4th Earl Chesterfield (1694–1773)
