The Truckee Meadows (Washo: Welganuk ) is a valley in Northern Nevada which overlaps with a small portion of Reno and Sparks, including both downtown areas. The valley is approximately 10 miles square. Reno is 69 square miles. Sparks is 24 square miles. Approx. 10% of Reno-Sparks is part of the Truckee Meadows.
Truckee Meadows has been incorrectly used interchangeably with the Reno-Sparks incorporated areas, which are not the same as the Truckee Meadows. The Truckee Meadow river basin follows the meadows along the Truckee River.
The Truckee Meadows is named for the Truckee River, which crosses the valley from west to east and goes through downtown Reno.
Famous quotes containing the word meadows:
“When daisies pied and violets blue,
And lady-smocks, all silver-white,
And cuckoo-buds of yellow hue
Do paint the meadows with delight,
The cuckoo then on every tree
Mocks married men, for thus sings he:
Cuckoo!
Cuckoo, cuckooO word of fear,
Unpleasing to a married ear.”
—William Shakespeare (15641616)
