A troubadour ( /ˈtruːbədʊər/, ; Occitan: trobador, ) was a composer and performer of Old Occitan lyric poetry during the High Middle Ages (1100–1350). Since the word "troubadour" is etymologically masculine, a female troubadour is usually called a trobairitz.
