Tributyl Phosphate - Production

Production

Tributyl phosphate is manufactured by esterification of orthophosphoric acid with n-butanol. A laboratory synthesis proceeds with phosphorus oxychloride:

POCl3 + 3 C4H9OH → PO(OC4H9)3 + 3 HCl

Production is estimated at 3,000–5,000 tonnes worldwide.
