Character Background
The character Tom Paris has two backstories. The original backstory, and the only one acknowledged onscreen, cast Paris as a disgraced officer dishonorably discharged from Starfleet for covering up pilot error following a shuttle accident on Caldik Prime. In her published novel, Pathways, Voyager producer Jeri Taylor provided an alternative story much more similar to the events in "The First Duty" by moving the accident to Paris' Starfleet Academy years and making his fellow cadets the victims of his recklessness.

Famous quotes containing the words character and/or background:
“We now demand the light artillery of the intellect; we need the curt, the condensed, the pointed, the readily diffusedin place of the verbose, the detailed, the voluminous, the inaccessible. On the other hand, the lightness of the artillery should not degenerate into pop-gunneryby which term we may designate the character of the greater portion of the newspaper presstheir sole legitimate object being the discussion of ephemeral matters in an ephemeral manner.”
—Edgar Allan Poe (18091845)
“Silence is the universal refuge, the sequel to all dull discourses and all foolish acts, a balm to our every chagrin, as welcome after satiety as after disappointment; that background which the painter may not daub, be he master or bungler, and which, however awkward a figure we may have made in the foreground, remains ever our inviolable asylum, where no indignity can assail, no personality can disturb us.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
