Tom DeLay - Early Life and Education

Early Life and Education

DeLay was born in Laredo, Texas. He spent most of his childhood in Venezuela due to his father's work in the petroleum and natural gas industry. He attended Calallen High School in Corpus Christi, Texas where he both played football and was the lead dancer in school productions. He attended Baylor University for two years, majoring in pre-med, but was expelled for drinking and painting Baylor school colors on a building at rival Texas A&M University. The Washington Post reported that DeLay obtained student deferments from military service while in college and that he received a high draft lottery number in 1969 which ensured that he would not be drafted for the Vietnam War. DeLay graduated from the University of Houston in 1970 with a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in biology.

Famous quotes containing the words early, life and/or education:

    Women who marry early are often overly enamored of the kind of man who looks great in wedding pictures and passes the maid of honor his telephone number.
    Anna Quindlen (b. 1952)

    It were sad to gaze on the blessèd and no man I loved of old there;
    I throw down the chain of small stones! when life in my body has ceased,
    I will go to Caoilte, and Conan, and Bran, Sceolan, Lomair,
    And dwell in the house of the Fenians, be they in flames or at feast.
    William Butler Yeats (1865–1939)

    Every day care center, whether it knows it or not, is a school. The choice is never between custodial care and education. The choice is between unplanned and planned education, between conscious and unconscious education, between bad education and good education.
    James L. Hymes, Jr. (20th century)
