Furs, such as ermine, vair, and their variants, are regular patterns that represent actual fur. Any charge may be tinctured of a fur, though furs occur infrequently in German and Nordic heraldry. In German heraldry, Kürsch (fur proper) is sometimes used, but this is seldom found elsewhere. Although the name "sable" comes from a kind of fur, the colour sable is not considered a heraldic fur.

Famous quotes containing the word furs:
“Long accustomed to the use of European manufactures, [the Cherokee Indians] are as incapable of returning to their habits of skins and furs as we are, and find their wants the less tolerable as they are occasioned by a war [the American Revolution] the event of which is scarcely interesting to them.”
—Thomas Jefferson (17431826)
