The Naked Gun was both a critical and box office success. In 2000, readers of Total Film magazine voted the first Naked Gun the 39th greatest comedy film of all time. It was voted the 14th best comedy of all time in a Channel 4 poll. It currently holds an 89% "Fresh" rating on movie review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, based on 35 reviews. The film was selected by The New York Times as one of The Best 1,000 Movies Ever Made. It was named the 7th Funniest Comedy Ever on a poll by Empire Magazine
