The Man From U.N.C.L.E. - Attempted Film Adaptation

Attempted Film Adaptation

Steven Soderbergh was attached to direct an adaptation of the television series with George Clooney set to star but had to back out due to health issues. After his departure, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ryan Gosling, Channing Tatum, Alexander SkarsgÄrd, Ewan McGregor, Robert Pattinson, Matt Damon, Christian Bale, Michael Fassbender, Bradley Cooper, Leonardo DiCaprio, Joel Kinnaman, Russell Crowe, Chris Pine, Ryan Reynolds, and Jon Hamm were considered for the lead role. Film production was to start in March 2012.

Executives from Warner Bros. wanted the budget to not exceed $60 million. However, Soderbergh felt that it was not enough money due to the demands of the project such as the 1960s-era sets and props and the multi-continental settings. In addition to casting problems, Soderbergh backed out of the directing chair.

Guy Ritchie was going to replace Soderbergh before the film adaptation was canceled.

Famous quotes containing the words attempted, film and/or adaptation:

Through Plato Aristotle came to believe in God, but Plato never attempted to prove His reality. Aristotle had to do so. Plato contemplated Him; Aristotle produced arguments to demonstrate Him. Plato never defined Him, but Aristotle thought God through logically and concluded with entire satisfaction to himself that He was the Unmoved Mover.
    Edith Hamilton (1867–1963)

I think of horror films as art, as films of confrontation. Films that make you confront aspects of your own life that are difficult to face. Just because you’re making a horror film doesn’t mean you can’t make an artful film.
    David Cronenberg (b. 1943)

Whatever there be of progress in life comes not through adaptation but through daring, through obeying the blind urge.
    Henry Miller (1891–1980)
