Painting
Christophe Antoine Gerle is one of the three men in the middle, with whom he discussed the balance between state and religion. The only deputy recorded as not taking the oath was Joseph Martin-Dauch from Castelnaudary. He can be seen on the right of David's sketch, seated with his arms crossed and his head bowed. This drawing was originally intended to be a print for a commissioned painting, but the painting was never finished.

Famous quotes containing the word painting:
“I never wanted to live an unembellished life, and I have never done it.... Living under such a compulsion has been like painting pictures of life, and I dont take kindly to suggestions that I might have been less egotistically employed had I become a trained nurse.”
—Margaret Anderson (18861973)
“One does a whole painting for one peach and people think just the oppositethat that particular peach is but a detail.”
—Pablo Picasso (18811973)
“When van Gogh paints sunflowers, he reveals, or achieves, the vivid relation between himself, as man, and the sunflower, as sunflower, at that quick moment of time. His painting does not represent the sunflower itself. We shall never know what the sunflower itself is. And the camera will visualize the sunflower far more perfectly than van Gogh can.”
—D.H. (David Herbert)
