Graphic and plastic arts are essentially limited to the adornment of utilitarian objects and the masks and other items used by the various societies. The verbal arts are stressed, and Temne use riddles and proverbs in instruction, engage in storytelling that verges on dramatic performance, and employ vocal music and drumming on various occasions.
