Modern Times
Military alliances were banned under the Swiss constitution of 1848, though troops still served abroad when obliged by treaties. One such example were the Swiss serving under Francis II of the Two Sicilies who defended Gaeta in 1860 during the Italian War of Unification. This marked the end of an era.
Since 1859, only one mercenary unit has been permitted: the Vatican's Swiss Guard, which has been protecting the Pope for the last five centuries, dressed in colourful uniforms, supposedly drawn by Michelangelo, reminiscent of the Swiss mercenary's heyday. Despite it being prohibited, individual Swiss citizens carried on the tradition of foreign military service into the twentieth century, including participation in the Spanish Civil War, usually on the Republican side.

Famous quotes containing the words modern and/or times:
“Women have acquired equal place to man in society, but the double standard has really never been relinquished; certainly not by men. Modern mans fear of passivity or of the active woman proves to be as eternal as modern womans struggle to come to terms with her femininity.”
—Peter Blos (20th century)
“I think of you more often than of anyone else in this part of the world. Id have liked to have you for a sweetheart, or a wife, or my mother or my sisteranything that a woman can be to a man. The idea of you is a part of my mind; you influence my likes and dislikes, all my tastes, hundreds of times when I dont realize it. You really are a part of me.”
—Willa Cather (18731947)
