The Sudarium and The Shroud
Many of the stains on the Sudarium match those on the head portion of the Shroud of Turin. The Shroud had been carbon-dated (1988) to the 14th century. It has been proven by chemical studies that the segment of the cloth used in the 1988 carbon dating is not the same chemically as the rest of the linen Shroud as published in the peer-reviewed renown scientific journal Thermochimica Acta. The claim the sample came from the Middle Ages is disputed by in a book by Joe Nickel. Blood tests done on both the Sudarium and the Shroud confirmed that the blood stains on both cloths were of the same type: AB, a common blood type among Middle Eastern people but fairly rare among medieval Europeans. The presence of blood on the Shroud was proven by the STURP scientists and expert who studied this linen cloth and cataloged its data. There is a claim of no evidence that it had the same blood type as the Sudarium, and the blood may have been of an unrelated person handling the Shroud centuries later.
