Treatment
The treatment of choice is penicillin and the duration of treatment is well established as being 10 days minimum. There has been no reported instance of penicillin-resistance to date, although since 1985, there have been many reports of penicillin-tolerance.
Macrolides, chloramphenicol and tetracyclines may be used if the strain isolated has been shown to be sensitive, but resistance is much more common.

Famous quotes containing the word treatment:
“Any important disease whose causality is murky, and for which treatment is ineffectual, tends to be awash in significance.”
—Susan Sontag (b. 1933)
“I feel that any form of so called psychotherapy is strongly contraindicated for addicts.... The question Why did you start using narcotics in the first place? should never be asked. It is quite as irrelevant to treatment as it would be to ask a malarial patient why he went to a malarial area.”
—William Burroughs (b. 1914)
“The treatment of African and African American culture in our education was no different from their treatment in Tarzan movies.”
—Ishmael Reed (b. 1938)
