Statutory Instrument - United Kingdom

United Kingdom

Statutory Instruments are the principal form in which delegated or secondary legislation is made in Great Britain. The process of creating of Statutory Instruments is governed by the Statutory Instruments Act 1946. This Act replaced the previous system in which Statutory Rules and Orders were made under the Rules Publication Act 1893. The change took place in 1948.

The advent of devolution to Scotland and Wales in 1999 resulted in many powers to make Statutory Instruments being transferred to the Scottish Government and Welsh Assembly Government respectively. Instruments made by the Scottish Government are now classed separately as Scottish Statutory Instruments.

In Northern Ireland, delegated legislation is organised into Statutory Rules, rather than Statutory Instruments.

Famous quotes containing the words united and/or kingdom:

Madam, I may be President of the United States, but my private life is nobody’s damn business.
    Chester A. Arthur (1829–1886)

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And do not bring us to the time of trial, but rescue us from the evil one.
    Bible: New Testament, Matthew 6:9-13.
